Understanding Pearl Farming
Pearl farming is a lucrative aquaculture business that involves growing pearls inside the shells of mollusks. It requires precision, patience, and proper care, but the rewards can be significant. Here’s a detailed overview of the process, costs, and potential profits involved in pearl farming.
How to start Pearl Farming

Tank Setup for Pearl Farming
To begin pearl farming, you need a well-designed tank. A tank with dimensions of 12 feet x 12 feet and a height of 5 feet is ideal. To facilitate easy water replacement, the tank should have a sloped base on one side. This ensures efficient drainage and helps maintain optimal water quality.
The Cost of Seeds and Maintenance
Seed Cost: Each seed, or mollusk, costs approximately ₹10.
They are placed inside plastic nets and dipped in water in the tank.

Maintenance: Regularly replacing water to maintain the right pH levels and providing food (such as Spirulina) is critical. The maintenance cost is estimated at ₹2,00,000 per cycle.
The Pearl Farming Process
- Acclimatization of Seeds:
Once you purchase the seeds, they must be acclimatized to their new environment for 15 days. During this period, the mollusks are fed Spirulina, which provides essential nutrients. - Inserting the Nucleus:
After acclimatization, the most crucial step is nucleus insertion. This process, done approximately 10 days after acclimatization, involves placing a nucleus inside the mollusk. The mollusk then secretes layers of nacre around the nucleus, forming a pearl. Precision is key, as improper insertion can kill the seed.

- Development Period:
It takes about 18 months for the pearls to fully develop. During this time, the mollusks require consistent care, including proper feeding and water quality maintenance.
Profitability of Pearl Farming
Output: From a batch of 3,000 seeds, approximately all reach maturity to produce pearls.
Yield: Each seed can produce two pearls.
Market Value: Even at the lowest grade, each pearl sells for approximately ₹150.
With 5,000 pearls produced from 3,000 seeds:
- Gross Revenue: ₹9,00,000
- Net Profit (after ₹2,00,000 maintenance cost): ₹7,00,000
